Middleware

What is middleware?

Middleware is a software layer that sits between different IT systems and enables data exchange between them. Instead of connecting every system individually to every other one, the middleware centrally handles the translation, control and distribution of data. In e-commerce, it typically connects systems such as ERP, PIM, online shop, marketplaces and CRM into one continuous process chain.

How does middleware work in e-commerce?

Middleware receives data from a source system, converts it into the required format, and transfers it to one or more target systems. Along the way, it also handles tasks such as checking data quality, triggering cronjobs for automated processes, or logging errors. The result: product data, stock levels or orders flow automatically between your systems without manual effort.

Middleware vs. API, ESB & iPaaS – the differences

Several similar terms come up around system integration. This overview helps you tell them apart:

  • API (Application Programming Interface): A single, defined interface through which two systems communicate directly. Middleware often uses several APIs to connect different systems.
  • ESB (Enterprise Service Bus): A classic, usually on-premise form of middleware for large, complex system landscapes.
  • iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service): A cloud-based middleware solution offered as a service rather than operated in-house.
  • Middleware (umbrella term): Covers all these integration approaches – from a simple connector to a complex integration platform.

Typical use cases for middleware in retail

In e-commerce, middleware is used wherever multiple systems need to exchange data automatically and continuously:

  • Transferring product data from the PIM to the online shop
  • Connecting to marketplaces such as Amazon or eBay
  • Synchronising stock and order data with the ERP system
  • Distributing digital assets from a DAM system to connected channels

OSKAR: EIKONA Media's middleware solution

With OSKAR, EIKONA Media offers its own middleware solution, built specifically for the demands of e-commerce. OSKAR connects systems such as Akeneo PIM, Shopware, marketplaces and ERP systems, fully automating data exchange between them. Its intuitive user interface lets you configure interfaces and manage cronjobs without deep technical expertise. This reduces manual processes, shortens your time-to-market, and creates a stable foundation for growing system landscapes.

Conclusion

Middleware as the backbone of your e-commerce system landscape

Middleware ensures your systems don't operate in isolation but function as one unit. It reduces manual effort, minimises sources of error, and creates the foundation for automated, scalable processes. To see what such a solution can look like in practice, take a look at our own OSKAR Middleware, which reliably connects PIM, shop, ERP and marketplace systems.
