What is the Conversion Rate?
The conversion rate (CR) shows what share of your visitors completes a desired target action. It is expressed as a percentage and therefore links reach to actual success.
A conversion is any action that holds value for you – a purchase, a newsletter signup, a contact request or a download. You define what counts as a conversion.
It is calculated as follows:
Conversion rate = (number of conversions ÷ number of visitors) × 100
Example: with 10,000 visitors and 250 purchases, the conversion rate is 2.5%.
Areas of use for the conversion rate
The metric is used wherever digital activities need to be evaluated:
- Online shop: Ratio of visitors to orders – the central success metric in the e-commerce funnel.
- Landing pages: Evaluating individual pages and their calls to action.
- Online marketing: Comparing channels and campaigns such as Google Ads, social ads or newsletters.
- Lead generation: Measuring enquiries, demo bookings or whitepaper downloads in B2B.
- A/B testing: Deciding which version of a page performs better.
The conversion rate is usually measured with web analytics tools such as Google Analytics 4. How to increase it systematically is covered in our article on conversion optimization.
Conclusion
A metric that turns Traffic into Results
The conversion rate shows you in a single figure how efficiently your visitors become customers. It is quick to calculate, but only meaningful if you keep the denominator consistent and segment by channel, device and page.
